MF Husain’s painting has set a new record as the most expensive modern Indian artwork ever sold, fetching a staggering ₹118 crore at auction
M.F. Husain’s monumental 1954 painting Untitled (Gram Yatra) achieved a historic milestone when it was sold at Christie’s New York on March 19, 2025, for approximately $13.7–13.8 million (₹118 crore). This sale set a new benchmark, making it the most expensive modern Indian artwork ever auctioned. The nearly 14-foot-wide canvas, composed of 13 vivid vignettes capturing the spirit of rural India, reflects Husain’s deep engagement with post-independence identity and narrative modernism. The record-breaking auction underscores Husain’s enduring legacy and signals a growing global appreciation for Indian modern art.
